The English Mixed Martial Arts Association (EMMAA) has confirmed this Autumn’s National Amateur Invitational tournament will be used to select the England Youth team for the 2022 IMMAF Youth World Championships.

The National Invitational tournament is part of the ‘Arnold’ Sports Festival at Birmingham’s NEC. It takes place between 1st and 3rd October, 2021. A round-robin format is likely to be used during the event but the final arrangements will be confirmed once all entries and weight divisions are completed.

Although selection for the England Youth team will be principally based on performances during the National Invitational, athletes unable to take part still have the chance to gain a spot on the team.
Additional regional events and squad training days are planned and performances in these will also be taken into account.

England Youth team coach Mark Spencer commented: “There are so many young, talented MMA athletes eligible for England.”

“I’m really looking forward to seeing them perform at the National Amateur Invitational tournament as we begin the selection process for the 2022 IMMAF Youth World Championships. I fully expect the final England youth squad to be very strong.”

He added: “By beginning to select the squad well in advance of the 2022 IMMAF Youth World Championships, we’ll be able to invest more time into the athletes and maximise their preparation and training.

“I am looking forward to working with everyone and seeing some great performances at the National Amateur Invitational tournament. My message to any aspiring fighter, who wishes to compete for England at the 2022 IMMAF Youth World Championships, is to take part in the National Invitational and show us how you can perform.”

EMMAA are inviting all amateur fighters from England – and from Ireland, Scotland and Wales – to apply to participate in the Birmingham tournament this October. There will be Junior (18-21) and Senior (open age) categories for individual bouts during the three-day event.

The tournament will take place inside a new fighting area, certified by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF). It will also feature guest appearances from world famous martial artists as well as educational material to showcase the development of the sport at an amateur level.

The ‘Arnolds’ will be one of the biggest sports festivals staged in the UK. The are set to be a number of guest appearances including Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, plus Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt, Irish boxer Katie Taylor and MMA icons Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St Pierre.

The final details of the England Youth squad for the IMMAF Youth World Championships in 2022, will be confirmed in due course. However it is envisaged that there will be male and female athletes in the England squad, with two places in each weight category.

In the 12-13 age group there are nine weight categories (31kg to 62kg). In the 14-15 age group, there are 10 weight categories (40kg to 77.1kg). In the 16-17 age group for boys, there are nine weight categories (52.2kg to 120.2kg) and in the same age group for girls, there are seven weight categories (47.7kg to 77.1kg).
